Oil spill likened to Wowowee stampede
The controversial oil spill that happened 2 weeks ago at Guimaras Island causes much alarm and havoc not only to the people surrounding that area, but also to environmentalist groups that fear the possible damage done to the marine life.
Petron Corporation chartered the tanker MT Solar 1 with 2 million liters of bunker fuel from Bataan to Zamboanga, but it sank in the rough seas last Aug. 11. Specialists say that the tanker is leaking 2,000 liters of oil per day. Such is the extent of the oil spill that it is said to have affected 66 sq. km. of sea and 220 kilometeres of coastlines. Because of the great damage that is continuing to ensue, the government has already sought the help of foreign agencies to help stop and clear the affected waters. PARALLELISM
What is the root cause of all this? And who are the people responsible? Investigations proved that the chartered tanker should not have been allowed to sail because their papers are already expired, and requirements are lacking. Why is it then, that the Philippine Coast Guard and the Marina allowed this tanker to sail, knowing full well that it contained very precious and potentially dangerous tons of oil? Could it be a simple matter that was overlooked? Such negligence that resulted to the pollution and death of an immeasurable number of marine life is unforgivable. What happened is not merely an accident, and there are those who are to be held responsible. The question now is, who are these people?
DOJ Sec. Gonzales hints that not only Petron should be held accountable, but the PCG and Marina as well. Not only is there criminal liability of reckless imprudence resulting in damage to properties, but also reckless imprudence resulting in deaths. As with what happened in Wowowee, it is clear who the guilty parties were, but it is unclear why until now no charges have been made- no people put behind bars. Government agencies have found to be liable in both incidents (that of which could have been avoided if only they did their jobs well- and damage could have been avoided or held at the minimum).Investigations would ensue; the harm has been done. Although there is no redeeming of the hazardous pollution caused to the environment, bringing those responsible to justice somewhat appeases those who were affected.
